The Pleione (or miniature orchid) is named after Pleione, mother of the Pleiades (in Greek mythology). They have relatively large, spongy pseudobulbs and has one or two pleated parallel-veined leaves, which grow to a height of 15–30 cm. The flowers which originate from new shoots at the base of the pseudobulb are big and showy and they grow well in shady areas of the garden. These will be sold as a lucky dip of various colours. *Dormant in winter.
